For five days now I've been at the University of Florida attending a summer institute at their College of Journalism and Communications. In one of my classes on Wednesday, Storytelling 101, I was shown two videos and asked to write a short narrative. Although I've done an On-the-Spot writing contest before (and won), I don't usually write a story within ten or fifteen minutes. Writing these two short narratives in a small window of time actually helped me learn how to get what I'm thinking into words and onto the paper and think on my feet.
Below you can check out what topic/video I was given and the two narratives I wrote.
Pitch Perfect bus scene
Singing to Party in the USA while driving to competition, the Barden Bella's were bonding over a popular song. A tension-filled bus ride slowly turned into an all out concert. This fun time ended when the bus started coming to a halt; the Bella's were out of gas. When Fat Amy, a Bella and the driver of the bus, was reminded by a fellow Bella that she had just put gas, Amy answered by saying, "Yeah I did and yet, maybe I didn't." What was starting to look like a good time for the girls to come together and find common ground, turned out to be not so great.
Ferris Bueller's Day Off car scene
"I gotta take a stand, I gotta take a stand against him." Finally fed up with how his father treats him, Cameron takes out his anger on his dad's most prized possession: his 1961 Ferrari 250 GT. After kicking the front of the car 16 times and denting it, Cameron, with no regrets, says, "I'm just tired of being afraid." The only way Frye knew how to deal with his father was to mess up what he loved the most, his car. Doing more damage than intended, he places his foot on the hood of the car, sending the Ferrari flying out from the high house onto the ground 80 feet below. Panicking after looking down at where the smoking car landed, he asks, "What did I do?" "You killed the car." answered Ferris.
